he person who disclosed the information did so on the condition of anonymity, as the deal cannot be officially announced until Wednesday.

The Raiders have been connected to Garoppolo since the moment coach Josh McDaniels benched Derek Carr, who had been their starting quarterback for nine years, with two weeks left in the season. Carr, who is the Raiders' all-time leader in passing yards with 35,222 and touchdown passes with 217, has since joined the New Orleans Saints.

McDaniels was the offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots when Garoppolo served as a backup quarterback to Tom Brady beginning in 2014. Since Brady was the starting quarterback, Garoppolo was traded to the San Francisco 49ers during the 2017 season and immediately became their starting quarterback.

Following a season where rookie Brock Purdy, the last player selected in the draft, took over and led the Niners to the NFC championship game (where they ultimately lost to Philadelphia), Purdy suffered an elbow injury early in that game and recently underwent surgery. However, after he completes his rehabilitation, the Niners will have two potential starters on their roster in Purdy and Lance.

Garoppolo's arrival to the Raiders comes after a 6-11 season, but the team possesses a formidable offense that includes wide receivers Davante Adams and Hunter Renfrow, tight end Darren Waller, and running back Josh Jacobs, who was tagged with the franchise tag after leading the NFL in rushing last season.

The Raiders currently own the seventh pick in the upcoming draft and may choose to draft a quarterback with that selection or wait until the later rounds. In related news, expected backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham has agreed to sign with AFC West rival Denver Broncos.
